The Safety of Solar
Solar Panel Installation Perth
Some media reports have questioned the safety of having a commercial solar system in your home. Some commercial solar power installations have caught fire and proved quite disastrous. But as usual the media reports are sensationalized and overhyped. There is some cause for concern, but only with those who compromise on quality.
The fire hazards are caused by poor installation of the solar battery system, or by poor quality DC isolator in the roof. The cheap solar companies that compromise on these items are putting homes and occupants at risk.
Batteries can be a risk if they are overcharged. This is something that a well-designed system should prevent. Some type of batteries, notable lithium –ion types, have a reputation for overheating and catching fire. These lithium-ion batteries are banned or restricted on aircraft for this very reason. But if the battery is well ventilated there should not be an issue. Proper installation of batteries, but in term so of system design and the physical conditions in which the system is installed, should all but eliminate the risk of battery fires. A quality battery is also essential.
There have been a few fires caused by DC isolators, a device used to isolate the system for maintenance. Ironically, these units are supposed to be a safety feature. The DC isolators installed in the roof near the solar panels seem to be the more prone to fire risks.
Systems based on microinvertors rather than one large invertor seem to bypass many of these dangers. The microinvertor each handle lower levels of power, so overheating is almost impossible in any decently designed system.
Look at the brand and model of the DC isolator, the invertor and battery in your solar system. Check online to see if there have been any recalls or safety concerns.
Look into Solaranayltics, which monitors the performance of your solar power system and quickly report any suspicious readings. This can address problems before they become serious.
